Latency to major services
Speed tells you how much data fits down the pipe. Latency tells you how long it takes to get there — and that is what you feel in games, video calls and every click on a website.
How this is measured, and what the number really means
A browser cannot send ICMP packets, so this is not the same as ping
on the command line. Each probe is a real HTTPS request to a tiny file on the
target's own network, and we time how long it takes to come back.
That means the figure includes DNS, the TCP handshake, the TLS handshake and one HTTP round trip — so it reads higher than a command-line ping, often by a good margin. The first sample pays for all that setup and is thrown away; later samples reuse the open connection and land much closer to the true round-trip time. We report the fastest of those.
Comparing targets against each other, or watching the same target over days, is
meaningful and useful. Comparing the absolute number against ping
output is not.
Nothing is sent to these services beyond an ordinary anonymous request for a small static file, with cookies and credentials switched off.

Why does the result change every time?
Internet speed is not a fixed number, it is a range. Data travels from your device to the server through several bottlenecks, and any one of them can lower the ceiling:
- A crowded Wi-Fi channel, or too much distance to the router
- Other devices downloading at the same time
- Congestion on your provider's network at peak hours
- The physical distance to the server you are testing against
That is why three tests at different times of day tell you far more than a single one.

Slow connection? Start here
The order matters. This starts with the cheapest, fastest thing to try and ends with what you should take to your provider.
1. Test properly first
A lot of "slow internet" turns out to be a badly run test. Before anything else:
- Stop downloads and video on every other device.
- Use an Ethernet cable rather than Wi-Fi if you can.
- Test in a private window so extensions stay out of the way.
- Test three times at different hours and go by the average.
2. Sort out your Wi-Fi
In dense buildings the 2.4 GHz band is usually saturated. If your router offers 5 GHz, move nearby devices onto it.
- Put the router out in the open and up high, not in a cupboard or behind the TV.
- Keep it away from microwaves, cordless phones and fish tanks.
- Set the Wi-Fi channel manually to a quiet one.
- A badly placed repeater halves your speed. Test before you commit to a spot.
3. Check the router and cables
- Older routers become the bottleneck above 100 Mbps.
- Replace ageing Cat5 cable with Cat5e or Cat6.
- Power the router down fully and back up after 30 seconds.
- A router that overheats degrades gradually, so retest after a long session.
4. High latency but fine speed? Look here
If the speed test looks healthy but the latency test does not, the bottleneck is the route rather than the pipe:
- Check whether one service is far slower than the rest. That points at routing or peering, not at your line.
- Turn off any VPN or proxy and run the latency test again — the difference tells you what the tunnel costs you.
- Try a different DNS resolver. Slow name resolution shows up as latency on every first connection.
- On Wi-Fi, latency spikes far more than throughput does. Compare against Ethernet.
5. Still wrong? Now call your provider
Do not call empty-handed. Have this ready:
- The CSV export from your history, with a timestamp on every run.
- Results taken over Ethernet, not Wi-Fi.
- Runs from several times of day showing the pattern.
- Your contracted speed next to the figure you actually measured.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between megabits and megabytes?
Connection speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps); file sizes are in megabytes (MB). One megabyte is eight megabits. So an 80 Mbps line downloads at roughly 10 MB/s at best. If your download manager shows about an eighth of your test number, everything is working correctly.
Why is the latency here higher than my command-line ping?
Because it measures something bigger. A browser cannot send ICMP packets, so each probe is a full HTTPS request: DNS, TCP, TLS and one HTTP round trip. That stack costs real milliseconds on top of the raw network time. The number is still useful for comparing services against each other and for watching your own connection over time.
One service shows "unreachable". Is my internet broken?
Not necessarily. It means the request did not complete: the service may be blocked on your network, filtered in your country, behind a corporate firewall, or simply having a bad moment. If everything else responds normally, the problem is specific to that service rather than to your connection.
Why is my speed lower than what I pay for?
Your advertised speed is a ceiling for the line, not a guarantee at any given moment. Wi-Fi, the router, other devices in the house, network congestion and distance to the server all take a share. A modest gap is normal. Consistently getting under half the ceiling over Ethernet is worth raising with your provider.
Other sites give me a different speed. Which is right?
Both can be. Every speed test measures your speed to one particular server. A closer server, or one with a better route, gives a higher number. For a fair comparison, always use the same server under the same conditions.
What do you store about me?
The latency figures, your provider name, approximate city, browser and operating system. Your IP address is never stored — only a salted hash that cannot be reversed, used to spot duplicates. Your personal history is tied to an anonymous cookie in this browser and you can delete it at any time from the history section. The speed test itself runs inside the OpenSpeedTest widget, and this site never sees its numbers.
Is it accurate on mobile?
Yes, with two caveats. On a cellular network your speed depends on signal strength and how busy the tower is, and it can change within minutes. Mobile browsers also hit their own ceiling before the network does on very fast connections.
